Who is Doug Guetzloe?

Before today, I had never heard the name Doug Guetzloe. But upon seeing the first political action committee (PAC) advertisement I can ever recall in a local Belle Isle election, I became curious about the sender, "Ax the Tax," which turns out to be a PAC run by a man named Doug Guetzloe. You can read more about this PAC and Mr. Guetzloe here:

Ax the Tax (Wikipedia)

Doug Guetzloe (Wikipedia)

Instead of focusing on any of the real issues in this election, Mr. Guetzloe's recent ad focuses on the important question of candidate Sue Nielsen's legal address, despite the fact that Mrs. Nielsen has described many times how she recently purchased her own home at 5006 Saint Germain Avenue after living in her daughter's house in Belle Isle for a couple years and deciding to settle here. Anyone interested can read more about Sue Nielsen's new home at her website: www.SueForBelleIsle.com. Despite Mr. Guetzloe's attempts to imply otherwise, Sue Nielsen would not be on Tuesday's ballot if she did not meet Belle Isle's requirements to run for office.

Mr. Guetzloe appears to have some pretty strong beliefs about campaigning, including the distribution of anonymous campaign literature. He describes himself as the only person in America ever jailed for not putting a disclaimer on his political flyers. According to the Florida Department of elections, Ax the Tax has regularly failed to file its required campaign finance reports from 2004 all the way through to the present.

Florida Department of Elections - Ax the Tax PAC

Aside from his convictions for not disclosing the author of his political advertisements, Mr. Guetzloe has also been convicted on two counts of willful failure to file tax returns on income totaling over $350,000.

Despite his questionable views on transparency in campaigning and campaign funding, Mr. Guetzloe also supports the lofty goals of lower taxes, smaller government and accountability from public officials. Therefore, it is difficult to see why Mr. Guetzloe is sending out last-minute attack ads in support of incumbent candidate Eric Spaulding. Under Mr. Spaulding's tenure on the Belle Isle City Council, our City has:

  • separated out waste management fees from residents' property taxes, allowing our city government to claim that it has not raised taxes even though residents are paying more. This has had the added effect of making the waste management fee ineligible for inclusion in the calculation of your tax deductions.
  • approved payment of $150,000 per year salary for our city manager contract, plus a $500 per month vehicle allowance, and insurance and retirement benefits, all without any open candidate search or interview process. This is approximately double the salary of typical city managers in cities our size around the state of Florida.
  • increased the size and payroll of the Belle Isle city government to unprecedented levels.
  • changed City Council meeting times from 7:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 a.m. - times when working residents cannot attend.
  • terminated the practice of putting out a sign to announce City Council meetings, despite repeated requests from residents to reinstate this practice.
  • regularly failed to publish minutes for at least 2 to 3 months following City Council meetings while leaving out crucial information and attachments.

  1. Who is Eric Spaulding that he would associate with the likes of a muckraker/tax cheat/convicted felon like Doug Guetzloe who accepted a $100,000 bribe from the Orlando Orange County Expressway authority????

  2. Let's thank Sue Nielsen for renovating a home in our district!

    1. Yes, I agree. It is pretty hard to live in your house while it is under renovations. Did you ever try it, it is not fun, very stressful.

    2. Maybe that is why she didn't want to run. If so, then she is putting Belle Isle ahead of her personal to do list.

    1. Maybe that's what happened to Eric, he got sprayed by Doug an got his stink on him. He became a disappointment for Belle Isle. Need to was that stink out of BI.

  4. Eric Spaulding attendance record is poor at best (see the council minutes all on file in the Belle Isle web site) while Sue Nielsen has virtually attended all the council meetings sine becoming a citizen. Further more she has actively taken part in these meeting revealing budget errors, the folly of crating a fire department, comparing the ridiculous $150,000 City Manager salary to a non-credentialed no experienced building contractor with a high school education and on and on. Eric Spaulding supported tax increases, made no effort to clean up a non-transparent city administration, voted yes for the creating a fire department and voted no to revise the charter calling for general elections to replace a resigning commissioner to replace mayor appointed replacement.

  5. Looks like Sue Nielsen has the same 4 voters commenting every time the transparent BI Sun posts. The real shame is Sue didn't even want to run. .. admitted by her in the Pine Castle Women's Club meeting. Why would anyone vote for someone who really didn't want the job?

    1. WRONG. I totally get what she said. That is the best kind of a person to run. One who cares deeply and is educated on most local issues. Is unbiased, only wanting what is best for Belle Isle, not herself. I thank her for the newsletter. It is about time the public is getting some facts on what has been going on. Most of us have been fed up in recent years with how quietly and fast things get pushed through-without our input. Some times we have no idea what scams and deals they are up to until it is too late and we are stuck with their bad decisions. The fire department was a great idea, but we certainly do not need a fire department. We have many great ones near by that do a fantastic job, per my experience.
It should be a hardship for anyone to run, it is not an easy job when you fight to do what is right and you are out numbered by the "fly by the seat of your pants" group we currently have. A couple decent people, that is about it.

    2. What are you so angry about. I must be # 5 by now. Let's do what is best for Belle Isle. I am not pleased with how the city council has voted on some things. I wondered if they really had our best interest at heart. The red flag went up and is still up. we need some investigation and people held accountable to their action, but that is not the way anymore. Ethics is a thing of the past.

  6. O Jeremy, Grasping for the last life vest as your Ship "The Bovine Excrement" sinks? Sue has stated to many folks she didn't want to run but the other two you had lined up backed out at the last minute. She hides behind her “love” of Cornerstone even though she has stated to many residents that “their is nothing wrong with Oak Ridge, Lake Nona and Boone.” And poor old Ed, totally lost trying to play both sides of the fence but secretly supporting you and Sue. This is great fun in small town politics. Got to love it, just remember you asked for it. Maybe one day when you mature and have a family and kids you will understand. But keep inflating that pompous little ego gives all of us something to laugh about......

    1. I do hope you are not one of our elected elite. How old does one need to be before they are mature?? You certainly are very childish is your comments. I so not know Jeremy or Ed or you, but you are very rude and sound threatening. Guess a bully would be a good label. If it were small town politics it would be good, but we have graduated in to the big time if you haven't noticed. Many of us were not in favor of Cornerstone or one reason or another. It is America and we are entitled to our own beliefs. You actually sound like Doug G on paper. Bitter and vengeful. Lighten up, you will be a happier person.

  7. Prior to this article, there was still a chance that I might have voted for Eric Spaulding. However, in view of his endorsement by Mr. Guetzloe, I will be voting for Ms. Nielsen. Mr. Spaulding would be more successful if he sought endorsement by people of stronger moral character.

In response to the previous post, this is my first comment on this forum. And, why would anyone vote for someone who really didn't want the job? Because the alternative is even less compelling.

    1. Just because someone says, they don't want the "job" doesn't mean they are not qualified and will not do a good or even fantastic service to the community. Knowing that running for this position and winning will be a huge battle with the good old boy network that is growing in Belle Isle. We need some new blood and people who are not in it to benefit themselves, but to better serve us and do what is best for our community.
I would think we would want some one like Sue who has been challenging what has been happening without the citizens having an opportunity to voice an opinion. We are getting tired of this unfair representation and more of us will be standing up for anyone like Sue who is trying to right the wrongs that have been going on for far too long. It may not happen this election, but the fire has been ignited and we the citizens of Belle Isle are not going to take what this group has been pushing down our throats much longer.
Thanks for this great newsletter to keep us updated. I believe what I have seen so far is very fair and balanced reporting. I do not personally know Sue or anyone running. The majority of voter do not KNOW the people on the ballot. We sometimes get tricked by lies and false advertising and don't realize it until that person has been on the job for a time to see their true colors. Right now, we know the true colors of all who are currently elected and only a FEW would I vote for again. We need a SPRING cleaning in Belle Isle or we will lose what it mean to live a one of the greatest communities in Orlando.

  8. If it was not so pernicious,it would be laughable that in such a small town election as this we have negative communications and the attention of Doug Gutzloe. Is this a Jon Syewart skit?

    1. Good point. I was surprised to get the post card and why and who would sent it out. I forgot Doug was the Ax man. Obviously many of these political hopefuls want to network with people of their own kind and motives. That post card lost my vote for Eric, I voted for him once and that was enough, we don't need the more of the Doug mentality in Belle Isle. One bad apple spoils the barrel.

  9. Why is Eric hiding behind Doug Guetzloe to have statements published against and about Sue.
Ask Eric how much time did the City Manager spend educating and polishing him prior to the Candidate forum?
Ask Eric why is the Belle Isle Code Enforcement officer is picking up and delivering signs to his home when she is on the City's payroll.
Ask Eric how much the city paid the previous General Service Director when she sued the City Manager and Finance Director and why
Ask Eric why we tend to favor the City of Ocoee for our city employees
……people view you as with the company you keep??
Eric Spaulding and Doug Guetzloe BFF

  10. I'm curious how much money went into Eric's and Guetzloe's double-sided color glossy mailers. That looks like more than $10,000 in propaganda all for a job that pays nothing! Belle Isle residents ought to be asking themselves why somebody is investing so much money in only this race?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Doug Guetzloe is promoting Boone High School...do you think they are BFF's? Is everyone going to quit supporting the school now, they must be tainted. This is nothing more than an attempt to smear someone else name.

    1. So are you suggesting that there is no linkage between Guetzloe and someone in Belle Isle City Government? How do you suppose he became interested in Sue and Eric?

    2. One would have to be blind not to see the connection. I should say, bad connection.

    3. Yes it is a smear attempt by Doug on Sue. If one doesn't have the backbone to speak for themselves, they get mole to do the dirty work. Low class activity. You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours. What political plans are they hatching? What is the pay back for such a favor. These people only think of themselves. We need to keep our eyes opened, something smells fishy.

  12. Doug Guetzloe is promoting saving Tinker Field...Oh my word I wonder why? There must be a reason why he is investing time and money in saving Tinker Field. All people involved must be his BFF...conspiracy abounds. What is he receiving for helping save Tinker Field?

    1. Another boondoggle that has been pushed on us by the corrupt elected official. When a very small percentage of the citizen want new stadium or whatever, it should not pass. But the untold truth of all the backroom deals that fill certain pockets full goodies is what has been going on in the city and county for many years now. Guess we have lost control as a majority of voters. They do what they want, by any mean possible. Wake up people.

  13. All rhetoric aside, consider the facts: Eric Spaulding has been a member of Belle Isle City Council during these last few years in which the transparency has become totally opaque and the shenigans of behind the scenes chicanery have run rampant. Vote for Eric if you want this kind of conduct to continue!

    ReplyDelete

    1. NO, we do not what this kind of bad behavior to continue. Now you can see what some people really WANT the job, it mean more than a job, it the benefits they are wanting. I do not trust any of them at this point. We need an over haul.

    1. you must agree with every issues Eric voted for, that says volumes of what is important for you. I voted for Eric once and he is not the person he represented himself to be. I will not be tricked again, at least by him. He has done a very poor job. He obviously wanted this job, he lost the first go around. If we keep getting messed over by the self interest representatives, we will need term limits.

  19. First, you should question everything and everyone especially when it's your tax dollars. Maybe Sue and Ed are running BECAUSE of a lack of questioning of our elected officials. Why not question EVERYONE that voted for a city manager who has no experience and is making a exorbitant amount of money. Just a thought folks

  20. Everyone seems to forget that the city manager worked for two years free....that is about $50,000.00 a year. I even heard one of those running say that is the only reason they have no problem with his salary. Looks like some people aren't getting all the facts about the candidates.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Free is free. When TruGreen offered my first lawn service for free, does that mean I should have expected to be double-billed next time to compensate them for the initial free service?

And if we really are compensating Mr. Severns for the time he offered to serve for "free," which he did only to prevent violation of our City Charter, then aren't we really compensating him with back pay in violation of the City Charter?

Also, if this is really back pay for the time Mr. Severns served for "free," then shouldn't his present pay level only be temporary? Isn't it about time we visit the issue of concluding his back pay and reducing his salary to a reasonable level for a city of our size?

And none of this takes into account the money Mr. Severns earned from the no-bid contracts awarded to his construction company, KNS Construction, for work at Cornerstone prior to the opening of the school (as disclosed by Mr. Spaulding at the recent candidate forum).

      Delete
    2. Good analogy - thanks for the clarification and another conflict of interest point made regarding the quietly awarded no-bid contracts. Shine the light on the rats and watch 'em run.

      Delete
    3. Exactly!!!!. The salary is not important, it's all the bennies that they fill their pockets with. No board member should have any connection with and should be disqualified to vote when one of their friend/family/business associates have a bid in for any contract the city votes on.
